Winter Storm Wrap Up - The Most Snow AND The Third Lowest Temperature Ever Recorded in Fairhope

Words are hard to come by after the Winter Storm so we are gonna give you the facts and then lots of video and pictures of the storm and snow at the end of the newsletter. The official snowfall total for Fairhope will end up being between 8 and 9 inches. This easily beat an old All-time snow record from 1885 of 6 inches in the Mobile area. The low this morning in Mobile was 6 degrees as well as for many thermometers around Fairhope. We believe it is probably the 3rd coldest temperature ever recorded in Fairhope. There will be an Extreme Cold Warning for tonight as temps head down to the upper teens and windchills are single digits. Roads will refreeze quickly tonight and become hazardous. Temps warm into the 60’s this weekend so enjoy the snow while it lasts.

Important Storm Update from Fairhope Mayor Sherry Sullivan

At this time, City administration and utility offices will reopen tomorrow, Thursday, January 23rd, at 1 p.m.

Out of an abundance of caution for our first responders and utility personnel, the City of Fairhope is requesting no vehicular or pedestrian traffic until temperatures rise above freezing tomorrow. Please be aware that road conditions are expected to worsen as the snow melts and turns to ice.

There will be no sanitation services on Thursday, but services will resume as normal on Friday. Garbage pickup originally scheduled for Thursday will be rescheduled to Saturday. If your service is missed for any reason, it will be picked up next week on your regularly scheduled day.

Our utility personnel are on standby and ready to assist customers if necessary. We do, however, ask for your cooperation in conserving energy, as electric and gas services are being used at unprecedented levels. Here are a few helpful tips:

  • Lower your thermostat by 2 degrees

  • Turn off lights in unoccupied rooms

  • Avoid using appliances or washing clothes during peak hours

Thank you for your patience as we navigate this once-in-a-lifetime weather event. A special thank you to all our public safety employees, public works staff, and utility personnel who have been working in extreme conditions to keep our city running safely and efficiently.

Be safe,
Sherry Sullivan
Mayor City of Fairhope
