Small Town Love

Happy Monday Morning Fairhope!

We may be small, but our Calendar of Events is BIG! Most of our residents agree that living in a small town has many perks - such as knowing your neighbors and the names and faces of our local leaders. Today we’ve gathered just a few of our favorite things to update you. However if we’ve missed anything, let us know so we can help spread the word.

First, your Monday Morning laugh: My friend said she wouldn't eat a cow's tongue because it came out of a cow's mouth. So, I gave her an egg.

Now grab your hot tea or coffee and dive into this week’s updates! Be sure to share this with your friends and neighbors. If they subscribe at FairhopeNow.com (or click the big blue button below), you’ll be entered to win a $25 gift card to Kind Cafe! Just email us at [email protected] to let us know, and we’ll add your name to the raffle. Here’s to a great week ahead! – John Oldshue & Anne Dorman

Small Town Bookstore Event

One of our favorite things about living in a small town is the locally owned businesses that are each so unique. This quarterly book review held at Page & Palette’s Book Cellar is on of our favorites. It has grown in popularity (with good reason!) so arrive early for a great seat.

On Tuesday Feb 4th at 6PM, Anderson, Tyler, Stacy and Carolyn will share new titles and upcoming winter releases we can’t wait for you to read — thrillers, mysteries, historical fiction, fantasy, non-fiction, contemporary romance and more! Purchases made that night for books we discuss receive a 10% discount. We look forward to seeing you at P&P! Learn more here

Small Town State of the City Expo

Next week the State of the City Expo will be held on Tuesday, February 4th, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Fairhope Civic Center. Mayor Sherry Sullivan will deliver her annual State of the City address, providing an overview of the past year's achievements and outlining future plans for the city. This rescheduled event will maintain its interactive format, allowing attendees to engage with city leaders and explore various municipal departments.

Each department will have a dedicated table to showcase their services and discuss their objectives for 2025. The mayor's speech is set to begin at approximately 5:30 p.m. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions, enjoy a light dinner, and participate in giveaways.

A Growing Town: New Restaurant

The Fairhope Times reports that Foosackly's Coming to town: During its next meeting, the planning commission will consider a proposed site plan for the city's first Foosackly's chicken-finger restaurant for the east side of rapidly-growing Hwy 181 just north of Hwy 104, on lot #4 of the 'Encounter Development' project.

Little Library with a Big Impact

Join friends and neighbors at The Fairhope Public LIbrary in the Giddens Conference Center in February for our Book Review and Lecture series. This month we will have four great book reviews. The presenters are Jo Sides, Savan Wilson, Mary Gottschalk, and Dick Schmidt.

Did you know? Ernest B. Gaston (1861-1937) once said that Fairhope and the Single Tax Colony had essentially been a poor man’s effort. Gaston was referring to physical or material wealth. The fact cannot be denied that the community of Fairhope from the very beginning attracted individuals of the highest intellectual and spiritual wealth and character. Fairhope has fostered an atmosphere of idealistic equality and democracy which, let us hope, will always be one of Fairhope’s charms.

Less than six months after the first pioneer Single Tax families began grubbing out homesteads from the harsh environment on the Fairhope site, a Single Tax friend, George B. Lang of Seneca, Missouri, donated a collection of books for the “Fairhope Free Library.” This basic library material brought pleasure and relaxation to the hardy settlers after days of toil and during rainy periods when work outside was not possible.

We can be very proud that our little town has had access from the very beginning to a collection of books and other reading material to keep its citizenry informed. The Single Tax Colony envisioned the formation of a public library in Fairhope even before they came to “Stapleton’s Pasture” on the Eastern Shore of  Mobile Bay. Learn more about the Library Here
