Tropical System May Impact Fairhope This Week
Hey everyone! So, there’s a potential tropical cyclone—number 18—in the Caribbean Sea today, and it’s expected to become a tropical storm named “Rafael” later on. Direct local impacts from this developing system could be possible later this week. We might see direct effects in Fairhope on Thursday, Friday, or into the upcoming weekend, depending on where the storm actually goes. The most likely scenario is that we’ll get increased chances of rain from Wednesday through Saturday as the system pulls in deep tropical moisture from the south, which is actually great because our drought conditions are worsening. Current forecasts show the storm’s inner core decaying once it reaches the central or northern Gulf of Mexico due to high atmospheric shear, which should keep it from intensifying into a major hurricane—but that’s not a guarantee. In addition to more rain, expect a high risk of rip currents at all local beaches this week. Other impacts like high winds and tornadoes are less certain right now; there are many scenarios that could keep those threats minimal, but we can’t say for sure just yet. Please check with Meteorologist Spinks Megginson or Meteorologist James Spann for updated information.
Veteran’s Drive will Open This Week
From Mayor Sherry Sullivan - Veterans Drive will reopen by the end of this week! 🚗 The pedestrian tunnel construction is close to being completed although it will not open until Flying Creek Nature Preserve is complete and open to the public. 🚷There are still paths, lights, and more that need to be installed to make it safe and accessible.
