Murphy Oil Station Approved for Hwy 181 & 104
The planning commission has approved a new Murphy Oil gas station and convenience store on Highway 181 at Highway 104. The 1.81-acre site will feature tree screening along the highway, with the entrance accessed from Rockwell Boulevard. The Fairhope City Council will make the final decision at an upcoming meeting.

The Art of Asking "Why?"
For Fairhope artist Jim Tripp, creating art isn't about following a plan—it's about discovering what's possible. A longtime artist whose work is now exclusively represented by Lyons Share Art Gallery, Tripp draws inspiration from history, mythology, Native American culture and, perhaps most of all, the unexpected potential hidden in everyday objects. Rather than setting out with a finished vision, he begins with sticks, feathers, reclaimed materials and other found treasures, asking a simple question: "What can it become?" That philosophy was on full display during his March 2026 solo exhibition at Lyons Share, where familiar materials were transformed into thought-provoking sculptures and mixed-media works.
Tripp describes himself as endlessly curious, spending far more time researching ideas than watching television or sports. His favorite pieces—the balance sticks—reflect both his artistic process and his outlook on life: finding meaning through experimentation rather than certainty. "I like using what I have," he says. "It forces creativity." For Tripp, art isn't about having all the answers. It's about embracing the journey, letting imagination lead the way, and inviting viewers to discover something different each time they look.

Howlelujah Tour Brings Music, Stories & Dog Rescue to Fairhope
Author and Episcopal priest Bill Miller and musician Joey McGee are bringing The Howlelujah Tour to our area on Sunday, August 16th. They'll stop at Page and Palette Bookstore in Fairhope at 1 p.m. and St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Magnolia Springs at 4 p.m., combining live music, storytelling, and support for Baldwin Humane Society and Stray Love. Proceeds benefit local animal rescue.
