Columbus Day Today
Today marks Columbus Day, a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the arrival of Christopher Columbus to the Americas on October 12, 1492. Traditionally observed on the second Monday of October, the day honors Columbus's voyages and their historical significance in connecting Europe with the New World. Some cities host parades and educational events to celebrate, especially within Italian-American communities, who see the day as a recognition of their heritage. However, the holiday has also sparked controversy, as many highlight the negative impact of colonization on Indigenous populations. In response, some states and cities now observe Indigenous Peoples' Day as a way to honor the history and cultures of Native communities.
Here’s Your Excuse: National Dessert Day
Today is National Dessert Day, a sweet celebration dedicated to indulging in all things sugary and satisfying. Whether it's cakes, cookies, pies, ice cream, or pastries, this day encourages people to treat themselves to their favorite desserts guilt-free. It's the perfect excuse to try out Punta Clara, Fairhope Chocolate, Sugar House and others. Across the country, many restaurants and cafes offer special discounts or limited-edition sweets in honor of the day. So, whether you're a fan of rich chocolate flavors or fruity delights, today is the perfect moment to savor something delicious! Check out the fun treats offered here at Punta Clara Kitchen !
Barnwell Area Drainage Project Underway
We are familiar with it here in the Fairhope area: our growth leads to constant change. A major drainage project is ongoing south of the Scenic Hwy 98 intersection in Barnwell too. It is supposed to fix chronic runoff issues in that area, according to one long-time resident.
