Fairhope Landmark Could Make Way for Hotel & Spa
Gulf Coast Media reports that one of Fairhope’s oldest historic buildings, the Fairhope Hardware Building at 301 Fairhope Ave., may soon face demolition. Constructed in 1922 and listed as a “contributing” structure in the Fairhope Downtown Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places, the building has served various purposes over the years, including as a department store, a Piggly Wiggly, and Fairhope Hardware. Despite its historic status, it lacks protections against demolition. Purchased in March 2023 for $1.6 million, the site’s owner, FST Sildi LLC, has proposed replacing it with a new structure housing a 27-room hotel, a medical spa, and a restaurant. The city’s Board of Adjustments and Appeals will consider this proposal during a public meeting on Monday, Nov. 18, at the Fairhope Municipal Complex.

A Fairhope Tradition: 12 Days of Christmas
Have you spotted the beautiful old 12 Days of Christmas cards that once hung on the lamp posts? Vicky Cook reminded us that: “These 12 Days of Christmas were painted by Mary Hunter. They were 2 by 4 ft. There were 29 other Christmas wooden cards painted by various artists and Elizabeth Box did a couple of those. The 29 were 4 by 8 ft., very heavy and not able to hang as they once did. Only 20 remain of the original 29. The 12 Days and the other 29 were painted during the 1978-79 year but were not displayed until 1979 due to Hurricane Frederick.”
Famous Hermit’s Hut Set to Move to Nature Park
The Fairhope Times reports that the legal paperwork from owner Ken Neimeyer is finalized, allowing the city to proceed with plans to relocate the famous hermit’s hut from private property on Parker Road to the new Nature Park nearby. Moving-specialists Wolfe House Movers of Pennsylvania have been asked to assess the move’s feasibility, with a citizens group committed to raising funds for the project.
