Fairhope Helps Family After House Fire
“My house burned down on September 17. Something woke me up, and I saw the smoke. The fire spread so fast, but I got out in time. My parents had that house in Fairhope for twenty-four years; now I live there by myself. I lost almost everything. It hasn’t hit me, yet. I just try to go to work, laugh, joke, and watch sports. But I know the tears are coming."
Maurice has worked at Bill E S restaurant for eight years and say that job and the family he made there helped turn his life around. That family is jumping in now to help Maurice after he lost everything. Here's how you can help:
Here’s the link to a GoFundMe set up by Bill E’s restaurant to help Maurice: https://gofund.me/81bef7a3
There is also a BBQ fundraiser at Bill E’s on Monday, October 7. Plate of BBQ ribs, potato salad, cole slaw, and bread is $25. Pre-order your plate by calling 251-181-2663. Pick-Up will be Monday for lunch.
Maurice's complete story is here.
City of Fairhope to Purchase “Alternative School” Site
The Fairhope Times reports that Mayor Sullivan recently confirmed that the city is moving forward with purchasing the old alternative school site from the Baldwin Board of Education, with a resolution expected to go before the city council soon. School Board Representative Christenberry also confirmed the deal, noting that attorneys are sorting out complex deed issues, similar to the process from the K-1 school purchase four years ago. Originally intended for a new school, the site no longer meets state specifications due to its size. The 14-acre property has been appraised at $665,000. Last July, The Hope Community organization proposed creating a garden, park, and community center on the site, but no public mention of a city purchase was made at that time.
Fairhope Library Presents “Antarctic Climate Change and What it Means for Alabama” Tonight
Dr. James B. McClintock, professor of Polar and Marine Biology at UAB, author, and outdoorsman, will speak at the Fairhope Public Library in the Giddens Conference Center, October 7 from 6:00 to 7:30 PM. Using stories and dramatic photographs from his sixteen research expeditions in Antarctica, Dr. McClintock will demonstrate how Antarctic climate change affects us a thousand miles away in Alabama. Following his presentation, Dr. McClintock will sign copies of his books. This presentation is sponsored by the Fairhope Public Library and the League of Women Voters of Baldwin County.
