Fairhope’s K-1 Center Begins Bold Tech Revival

AL.com reports that Fairhope’s historic K-1 Center, a former elementary school built in 1925, is set to begin a transformative new chapter after sitting vacant for nearly a decade. Once a cornerstone of early education in the city, the building will soon be reborn as a hub for tech startups, entrepreneurship, and community collaboration. The Fairhope City Council approved a $6.1 million construction contract and a symbolic 15-year lease at $1 per year with the Baldwin County Commission and Economic Development Foundation to allow Hatch Fairhope to lead the redevelopment. Backed by $5.5 million in combined state, federal, and Innovate Alabama funding, the project is positioned to play a major role in the city’s emerging technology sector.

City and economic development officials hailed the initiative as a “monumental” and “truly impactful” move that will revitalize a cherished landmark while injecting new energy into downtown Fairhope. Lee Lawson of the Baldwin County EDA compared the future K-1 Center to innovation hubs like Birmingham’s Innovation Depot and Mobile’s Innovation Portal, emphasizing its regional importance for tech entrepreneurs. While a lengthy historical review delayed the start of construction, some parts of the property are already in use under a separate lease with the Fairhope Educational Enrichment Foundation, which is developing STEAM programs for students. A long-term master plan could also include additional projects like a performing arts center, further enhancing the property’s community value.

Fairhope’s ESAC Wins Major Grant

WKRG reports that the Eastern Shore Art Center (ESAC) in Fairhope has received a $50,000 Creative Places Arts Facilities grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts to support critical facility updates, including expanding the gift shop, adding two ADA-compliant bathrooms in the gallery area, and replacing the handicap elevator. This funding, combined with a major donor gift and support from the Single Tax Corporation, will help make the center more accessible and improve visitor flow. ESAC is partnering with Klarman + Day and Walcott Adams Verneuille Architects on the renovations, with Academy Director Reanna Watson emphasizing that the most meaningful improvement is making the space fully accessible to all.

Cajun Market Idea is Dead :(

David Black reports that plans to open the Cajun-inspired Southern Bayou Market in the former Bay Break building on South Mobile Street have been called off due to zoning and permitting hurdles, co-owner Perry Boyd confirmed. The Mississippi native, known for his flavorful Cajun and Southern cooking, says he and partner Barbara Edwards are now pivoting to focus on their food trailer, The Rolling Fork, while they search for a new location in Baldwin County. Despite the setback, the duo remains committed to bringing their Cajun comfort food to the area and hopes to relaunch the market concept at a different site in the near future.
