Fairhope 4 Years Later: Hurricane Sally’s Impact Still Fresh in Our Minds!

Hey Fairhope! It’s Monday, and we’re all just trying to recover from the weekend—but hey, better than recovering from a hurricane, right? We’ve had our fair share of that, with Hurricane Sally and Hurricane Ivan both blowing through on this very date in the past 20 years. Not exactly a party—0 stars, would not recommend 🤮.

Fairhope 4 Years Later: Hurricane Sally’s Impact Still Fresh in Our Minds!

Hurricane Sally whipped through our area four years ago today. It was supposed to be a tropical storm but re-intensified into a Cat 2, catching many by surprise. It also moved so slowly. We stayed up all night listening to the roaring winds that wouldn't end. It hit the Marlow community close to me hard–one already struggling with losses from the Coronavirus. I spent a couple of weeks telling their stories to get attention for their needs. But help came from neighbors before the winds passed and the rain stopped. They got out chainsaws to clear roads and check on each other. A gas station parking lot became a community center where volunteers handed out hot food, clothes, water, and cleaning supplies. It was folks pulling together after months of social distancing had pulled them apart. It was connection and community that we needed to feel again. Here is one inspiring story and another inspiring story from the aftermath. And when people are recovering they get hungry :) - Lynn Oldshue

Fairhope Legend Nall Hollis Passes Away

World-renowned Fairhope artist Nall Hollis, known professionally as “Nall,” has passed away at the age of 76, according to social media posts from friends. Celebrated for his work in various mediums such as etchings, oil, and watercolor, Nall’s art was showcased globally, with recent exhibitions at the Mobile Museum of Art and The National Arts Club in New York. A graduate of the University of Alabama, Nall furthered his studies in Paris before returning to teach in Alabama, where Troy University named a museum in his honor. Troy’s Chancellor, Dr. Jack Hawkins Jr., hailed Nall as a treasure whose artistic vision enriched the world. Nall gained international fame in 1997 after hosting a star-studded event in France and continued to garner accolades throughout his career, including being named Alabama’s Distinguished Artist of the Year in 2007. At the time of his passing, Nall operated a studio museum in Fairhope, Alabama.

Fairhope Filmed “Life of Chuck” Has Oscar Buzz

Stephen King’s novella The Life of Chuck, adapted into a film by writer-director Mike Flanagan and produced by Fairhope-based producer Scott Lumpkin, has won the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, setting it up as a potential Oscar contender. Starring Tom Hiddleston as Charles Krantz, the film unfolds in reverse chronological order, weaving a cosmic story amidst apocalyptic events like sinkholes and blackouts. With a tone reminiscent of Stand by Me, it features performances by Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan, and Carl Lumbly, and includes a talked-about dance sequence with Hiddleston and Mark Hamill. Filmed almost entirely in Baldwin and Mobile counties, with many scenes shot in and around Fairhope, the movie is eagerly awaiting its release date.
